Rhinoplasty

When considering whether rhinoplasty is right for you, there are several things that should be taken into account.

Though often a cosmetic procedure, nose jobs are a common treatment option for those struggling with obstructed breathing as well. When considering whether rhinoplasty is right for you, there are several things that should be taken into account. For one, consider your age. With the exception of pediatric patients who have a facial birth defect such as cleft palate and those that has sustained nose injuries, younger teens (under 15) are not good candidates for nose jobs. This is because the bones of the nose are still undergoing changes until adulthood. Additionally, those who smoke should consider quitting before surgery, as smoking causes poor blood flow and may pose complications during the procedure.

If you have assessed the risks and consider yourself a good candidate for the procedure, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Travis Shaw is the perfect first step to improving the shape of your nose.

Considering a Rhinoplasty?

When you come in to discuss your rhinoplasty procedure, be prepared to answer a series of questions. These questions are all aimed at helping us determine your motivation and helping us to achieve your goals. Having a nose job usually involves short term swelling, pain, and a substantial recovery period. Therefore, determining a candidate’s willingness to undergo the psychological and physical stress is extremely important. Dr. Shaw will also carefully examine the external and internal anatomy of your nose, and discuss his recommendations based on your personal goals. These will focus on the anatomical thirds of your nose, your nasal angles, and overall symmetry.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Procedure

During the rhinoplasty procedure, incisions are made within the nose where they are not visible. In some cases, a small incision is made between the skin of the nostril, underneath the nose. The cartilage and bone below the skin is then sculpted to create the new nose shape. Dr. Shaw custom tailors the procedure based upon the patient’s specific nasal anatomy, facial structure, and unique features. A successful rhinoplasty improves facial harmony and draws attention away from the nose and toward the eyes. A typical rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can take about 1-3 hours.

Expected Surgical Results

The results of your rhinoplasty will be long-lasting. Immediately after the procedure, some swelling will be experienced but will subside in roughly 7 days. In some cases, it may take up to a year for nasal contour to fully refine. Until your nose completes the healing process, you may notice gradual changes in its appearance. As you age, your nose will undergo some gradual changes, but the results of rhinoplasty surgery are permanent.
