Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can go a long way in improving your look and decreasing the impact of allergic symptoms.

Vision complications and a drowsy appearance are two of the most common reasons for eyelid surgery. In addition to these issues, having droopy eyelids can make one more prone to experiencing allergy and edema symptoms. These symptoms can worsen particularly if one is exposed to dirt, dust, pollen, and other potential allergens. When all else fails, Blepharoplasty, or droopy eyelid surgery can serve as an excellent treatment option. Dr. Travis Shaw is dedicated to providing surgical treatment options for those struggling with their eyelids.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

When it comes to deciding whether or not a blepharoplasty is necessary, it’s important to consider one’s intention for having the surgery. Those who develop droopy eyelids due to genetics or age may find a cosmetic eyelid surgery necessary. Functional surgery on the other hand, is performed for medical reasons. Common medical reasons for eyelid surgery include: difficulty wearing glasses, irritation, and forehead discomfort. Both cosmetic and medical reasons can find commonality in their fast and effective surgical solution.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The procedure involves making incisions in the crease of the upper eyelid and right beneath the lashes or behind the lower eyelid. After making the incisions, the surgeon will use glue or sutures to carefully piece back your skin. In some cases, CO2 lasers may be used for resurfacing skin (to reduce wrinkles) and added incisions to elevate the eyebrows may be needed. Eyelid surgery typically takes between 1-2 hours to complete and can be performed in Dr. Shaw’s modern office with a minimum amount of downtime. Scarring is minimal as the skin of the eyelid heals exceptionally quickly.

Expected Surgery Results

Following your procedure, you may experience swelling and soreness for 5-7 days. After that time, you should be able to resume your normal activities. While your eyes heal, topical antibiotic ointment should be applied to avoid infections. Applying cold packs and warm compresses to the eyes can help reduce swelling and speed up recovery. While mild discomfort is common, prescription medication is rarely needed for pain management and a standard non-prescription pain reliever should help. You can expect to see full results in several weeks following the surgery.
