Acne / Acne Scarring

Acne and acne scarring are two of the most common issues affecting young adults.

Acne and acne scarring are two of the most common issues affecting young adults. Those living an active, outdoor lifestyle can attest to having frequent breakouts. This is due to increased sweating and exposure to the elements. There’s nothing wrong with spending time outdoors – in fact, exercise is an essential part of staying healthy. Treatment doesn’t require a lifestyle change. Travis Shaw, MD provides a range of FDA-approved treatment options for dealing with acne and scarring. Our treatments are fast, effective, and long-lasting.

How Does Acne and Acne Scarring Occur?

Acne occurs due to a buildup of bacteria in our pores. Some have worse acne than others due to hormonal and environmental reasons. Some are prone to having just a couple of occasional zits, while others experience frequent flare-ups. As those in the latter category know, flare-ups often lead to long-lasting scars. Acne scars form when our bodies rapidly release collagen to counteract skin damage. As a result of this rapid collagen release, our skin becomes thicker and less flexible. Some scars rise while others stay flat and jagged, leading to a bumpy skin texture.

Injectables

Bellafill is currently the only FDA-approved injectable used to treat acne scarring. This treatment is made of collagen sourced from cows and features a small quantity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) beads. Not only does Bellafill provide volume and lift to reduce wrinkles, it has also been shown to diffuse scars.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peel treatments involve the application of mild acids to the skin. The most commonly used acids in skincare are Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and Beta-hydroxy (BHAs). These safe, exfoliating agents cause the upper layer of skin to peel off. As the old, scarred layer peels off, new skin emerges leading to a smoother and clearer complexion. There are three common variations of peels: Superficial, Medium, and Deep. Travis Shaw, MD uses superficial peels for mild treatments and deep, penetrating peels for severe conditions.

HydraFacial

HydraFacials clean, hydrate, and protect the skin. HydraFacials work by first cleansing your skin through gentle exfoliation, then removing debris bacteria from your pores, and finally protecting your skin through antioxidants.

How Long Does Scar Removal Take?

Acne and scar removal treatment times vary based on your preferred option. Bellafill treatments typically take 10-15 minutes each with multiple sessions being necessary depending on the severity of your condition. Results from the treatment can be noticed immediately and generally last up to 5 years. Chemical peel application time depends on your specific skin care needs. Results can be seen after just 1 session and tend to be long-lasting. PicoSure sessions take an average of 10-20 minutes. Multiple sessions may be necessary for optimal results.
