Medical Chemical Peels

These peels are individualized and made to deliver radiant, natural results.

Dermal collagen and elastin content gradually decline as we get older. When combined with sun exposure, this can lead to sagging, uneven pigmentation, and the appearance of unsightly blemishes. Dr. Shaw believes in empowering his clientele through natural skincare solutions that not only beautify, but also build confidence. That is why our clinic is happy to provide the Richmond community with a range of effective medical chemical peels. These peels are individualized and made to deliver radiant, natural results.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are skincare treatments that involve the application of mild acids directly to the skin. Commonly used acids such as glycolic, trichloroacetic, salicylic, lactic, and carbolic acid (phenol) are safe for skin and act as exfoliating agents. Acid concentration in our peels have 3 tiers of intensity: Superficial, Medium, and Deep. At Travis Shaw, MD, we begin every consultation with a thorough assessment of our patients’ particular skincare needs. After the initial assessment, we will provide you with chemical peel options based on your specific condition.

Treatment With Chemical Peels

Our chemical peels generally take 15-30 minutes to apply. However, this time may vary depending upon any add-ons and individualized aftercare instructions. During a chemical peel, most people feel a slight burning and stinging sensation that lasts about 5-10 minutes. Chemical peels can be combined with dermaplaning for added skin rejuvenation.

Results of Chemical Peels

Depending on the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. This is accompanied by redness and scaling that ends within 3-7 days. Light/Superficial peels offer a nice radiance and glow with zero downtime. This variety may be repeated at 4-week intervals until optimal results are reached. Medium-depth and deep chemical peels may result in some slight swelling, redness, and sensitivity. Afterward, your skin may peel over a period of 7-14 days. You’ll need to avoid direct sunlight for several months after a chemical peel since your new skin will be fragile and prone to irritation.
