Botox & Facial Filler

Most everyone has heard of Botox or of fillers like Juvederm, Radiesse, Restalyne, Belotero or Bellafill. But what exactly does each product do to rejuvenate the face and how does each work? Which one is best for you? It can be quite confusing and even overwhelming.

Let’s take a look at Botox and fillers and talk about how they are different, what each one can do to improve your appearance, and even how they can work well together.

Botox

Simply put, think of Botox as ironing out the wrinkles in your face, and injectable fillers as softening the deep folds from the bottom up. Botox works to smooth out wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that are the actual underlying cause of the wrinkles themselves. Take a look at the area between your eyes in a mirror: when you frown, muscles over each brow pull in towards the nose and cause the skin to crinkle into vertical lines. These are often referred to as “The 11’s” since it can look like the number 11 is over your nose. Botox has excellent effects in this area by relaxing the muscles that cause the 11’s, giving the eyes a happier, more approachable appearance.

Botox is also very effective when used for the wrinkles around the eyes known as “crow’s feet.” These lines are a result of smiling and squinting. When the 11’s and the crow’s feet are both treated, a nice natural elevation of the brow occurs; this is called the “Botox Browlift.”

Botox can also be used for wrinkles on the nose known as “bunny lines,” or for the horizontal wrinkles across the upper forehead. In the lower face, the corners of the mouth can be lifted with small injections.

Botox lasts, on average, about 3-4 months, though some patients notice that the effects last longer after 3 or 4 Botox treatments.

Juvederm and Fillers

Injectable fillers such as Juvederm work by filling in wrinkles or folds in the face and increasing the volume of your skin. They have a pleasing, rejuvenating effect that softens facial features and can erase a sunken or gaunt look. Juvederm can give subtle, nonsurgical rejuvenation in the cheeks and lower face. For example, if you think about the transition from your cheek to your mouth, it is much like a hill and a valley. By filling in the valley, the transition area of the crease is made much softer and unnoticeable, giving a naturally youthful appearance. Juvederm Voluma This new filler from Juvederm can last up to 2 years. It gives a nice lift to the cheeks and midface, and can have subtle results in helping dark circles or hollow areas under the eyes. Bellafill in Richmond, VA Our offices also work with a new filler called Bellafill, which can work for longer than other fillers because it helps stimulate your body’s own collagen production and recreate the formerly degraded structure of skin. Bellafill is a collagen gel formula with PMMA microspheres that replace volume in the skin to raise depressed scars and smooth out the skin’s appearance, while working with your body to support natural collagen production.

Dr. Shaw has found that combining Botox and injectable fillers can give longer lasting, more impressive rejuvenation in certain areas of the face. Botox acts to relax the muscles, which can speed the breakdown of the filler products. One of the best locations for this technique is the under eye area. Many patients who have a tired appearance with dark circles under their eyes might think they need eyelid surgery to improve their appearance. In actuality, combining Botox and fillers will give a soft, refreshed appearance without the need for surgery, and will dramatically improve dark circles. Another area that looks beautiful with Botox and fillers is the corners of the mouth. Loss of volume contributes to a drawn, angry look and the marionette lines which extend down to the jaw line. The muscles at the corner of the mouth pull downward turning a smile into a frown. By treating this area with Botox and fillers together, a happy, soft and inviting look is restored. This combination approach gives impressive, lasting natural results.
