CHIN AUGMENTATION OR IMPLANT WITH FILLER

Chin augmentation with filler is a great option for people who are either considering a chin implant or would like a more balanced chin but do not want to have the downtime associated with surgical chin augmentation.

The chin is often overlooked in facial rejuvenation, but it plays a very important role in the overall esthetics of the face. Studies have shown that a strong, well-balanced chin causes a psychological response when we subconsciously evaluate the attractiveness of someone’s face. A weak or out of balance chin can lead to negative perceptions of a person’s face.

In the age of selfies and Facebook, many people now are realizing their jawline is not as defined as they would like and are considering chin augmentation to improve their appearance. Chin augmentation with filler or an implant is one of the fastest growing procedures according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.

In addition to adding balance and symmetry to the face, chin augmentation can also help make the nose look smaller. When performing rhinoplasty, Dr Shaw always takes the dimensions of the chin into consideration to give the best results.

The esthetic ideal for a man’s chin is strong and angular, and connotes power, vitality and well-being. David Beckham and Jude Law are examples of men with strong chins.

For females, a well balanced and more rounded chin that complements a heart- shaped face is more desirable. Natalie Portman and Courtney Cox both have chins that are seen as esthetic ideals.

The explosion of different filler products has expanded the choices and possibilities for non surgical chin augmentation. Filler options include Juvederm Voluma, Radiesse, Sculptra, and Perlayne. As an Allergan certified injectable instructor and facial expert, Dr Shaw has extensive knowledge in both anatomy and injection technique to give natural, lasting results.

The following are answers to common questions:

HOW ARE CHIN INJECTIONS PERFORMED?

The procedure takes about 15 minutes to complete and is done in our relaxing, comfortable office. Numbing cream is applied to the face for about 30 minutes to minimize discomfort. We can give you a small amount of cream prior to your appointment so you can apply it yourself on the way to the office. The face is then thoroughly cleansed in an aseptic technique. A series of 3-6 small injections are made deep into the tissue around the chin. Dr Shaw then molds the filler  via gentle massage to give the desired look.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

The filler material lasts up to 2 years, and then is gradually broken down by your body. This process happens over several months, not days. You will notice a gradual depletion of the effects as the filler is resorbed.

DOES CHIN AUGMENTATION HURT?

Dr Shaw does everything possible to make the experience as pain-free as possible. He uses powerful numbing cream and state of the art blunt cannulas. The blunt cannulas replace multiple needle sticks for the injection, and reduce the risk of bruising and other complications.

IS THE PROCEDURE FDA APPROVED?

Use of filler in the chin is considered off-label use of the products. It is not experimental. Off label use simply means that though the FDA has not approved the product, it can be used by a licensed physician if deemed safe. For example, aspirin is not FDA approved for prevention of heart attack or stroke, but is routinely used off-label for this indication. Similarly, injectable fillers are used off-label in the lips, under the eyes, in the nose, and in the temple area.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Chin injection is a very safe procedure when performed by a board certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr Shaw. Common side effects include pain during injection, bruising, irregularities in the filler, or local infection.

IS THERE DOWNTIME WITH CHIN AUGMENTATION?

After injections, patients can return right away to their lives, without any restrictions or downtime.
